I got a big lump in my throat the other day, because on July 11, 1966, the Newlywed Game debuted on ABC Television. I’ll never forget that day. I was so nervous. I remember standing in my dressing room praying to God that all would go well.
I got through the show okay, but the executive producer, Chuck Barris, came up to me after the show and said, “Bobby, I’ve just seen you do something I’ve never seen before. You went a half hour without blinking.” That’s how scared I was.
Fortunately, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara gave a speech that day and CBS and NBC covered it. ABC premiered the Newlywed Game and we had Super Bowl ratings. Wheeee!
